As Murat's cavalry ride onto the steppe west of Borodino on the afternoon of 5 September,
they find their foe manning an earthwork near the village of Shevardino.
Screened by jager infantry and supported by cavalry, the French must take this position
before they can deploy properly and engage Kutuzov's main force.
After laying bridges over the Kolocha near Fomkino, Compans' 5th Division,
followed by two cavalry corps, advance in glistening array toward the waiting Russians.
