Marshal Davout wanted to take his I Corps and, together with Poniatowski's V Corps, swing around the Russian left flank.
With this maneuver he believed he could roll up the Russian line and pin them against the Kolocha River.
This he hoped would destroy or at least completely rout the Russian army, thereby ending the battle and the war in one swift stroke.
