After struggling through the woods, Poniatowski's V Corps has finally emerged at about 8am,
already several hours behind schedule. They are greeted by cannon and musket fire
from the 1st Grenadier Division of Tuchkov's III Corps, deployed in and around the village of Utitza.
Severely weakened by the loss of the 3rd Infantry Division — sent north to reinforce
Bagration's troops at the fleches — General Stroganov's grenadiers are soon in need of assistance themselves.
