After the setback at Tarutino, Napoleon knows he must abandon Moscow. The French lines of supply
and communications would be easily cut during the winter by Kutusov.
Only the Medyn Road offers an acceptable route. Getting to it would allow Napoleon to move back through areas
that still contain decent forage for his army. To have to retreat back over his route into Russia
would mean moving over devastated areas, with little food, meaning much of his army would starve,
leading to its disintegration. Sitting astride the Medyn Road is the town Maloyaroslavets.
His advance Guard has moved into the town, but are about to be pressed by the Russian advance guard,
with the remainder of Kutusov's forces on their way. He must attempt to capture Maloyaroslavets
and outlying areas so that the remainder of his army may escape.
